The latest data, collected at 71 study sites between 2002 and 2023, show an encouraging trend: in 79 percent of the areas, the condition of the seagrass meadows is rated as good, while only ten percent are in decline. This positive development shows that living Posidonia meadows can naturally regenerate and spread, especially if they are protected from major damage.<\/p>\n

Methods and participants in data collection<\/h2>\n

Monitoring is carried out underwater using environmentally friendly techniques that aim to accurately record the condition of the Posidonia without damaging the plants. In addition to the density of Posidonia, the proportion of dead plant parts is also documented. In addition, attention is paid to the occurrence of invasive species and the population of the noble pinniped (Nacra). The water temperature is also measured at selected locations. Around ten organizations, twenty diving centers and up to one hundred volunteers take part in this important environmental project every year.<\/p>\n
