But those who rent out their apartments to tourists without a license could soon be in for a rude awakening. <strong>Illegal vacation rentals<\/strong> have been a problem for years, and now the authorities are tightening the thumbscrews even further. The penalties? Severe. And that is an understatement: The fines now range up to <strong>400,000 euros<\/strong>. A case in <strong>Calvi\u00e0<\/strong> recently made headlines where this maximum penalty was imposed. Another landlord in <strong>Palma<\/strong> had to <strong>40,000 euros<\/strong> pay - expensive fun for a few weeks of sun and a quick return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/isla-travel.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/hausfassade_palma-2-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"House facade Mallorca\" class=\"wp-image-25974511\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9Jagoda_Kondratiuk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When the inspectors come<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities have not only sent out a few nasty letters, but have now started a real <strong>Taskforce<\/strong> on the road. <strong>Inspectors<\/strong>pretending to be harmless vacationers book themselves via <strong>Airbnb<\/strong> and <strong>Booking.com<\/strong> in suspicious apartments - and thus double-cross the illegal landlords. Equipped with credit cards and a lot of patience, they uncover violations. So far <strong>over 6,000<\/strong> illegal vacation rentals have been uncovered, and the penalties imposed already add up to <strong>1.79 million euros<\/strong>. One can only hope that the landlord has calculated well beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A tight spot for locals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While for some tourists the dream of a Mallorcan vacation home becomes reality, things look rather bleak for the locals. Illegal rentals drive the <strong>Rental prices<\/strong> and the number of affordable apartments for Mallorcans is shrinking rapidly. Especially in popular areas such as <strong>Palma<\/strong>, <strong>Pollen\u00e7a<\/strong>and <strong>Calvi\u00e0<\/strong> things are getting tight. The government is therefore cracking down - and with success. This year alone <strong>279 Procedure<\/strong> opened. A sign that the authorities are no longer patient with the manipulation of the rental market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A shock worth millions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Only recently, a case of almost <strong>1 million euros<\/strong> penalty - a clear signal to all those who still believe they can outsmart the market.
