They still exist, these films that are a bit like time travel - back to an era when Mallorca was not a place of longing for millions, but a quiet spot in the Mediterranean. The documentary \"Longing for Mallorca - How it all began\"<\/strong>which was published on Thursday, November 21, at 8:15 p.m.<\/strong> on Arte takes us right there. To the 1950s, when tourism slowly reached the island and today's vacation paradise was still a long way off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When traveling was still a hassle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just imagine: Back then, a vacation meant packing suitcases into a car, taking a ferry to the island - for hours, often in swell - and finally spending a few days or weeks in a simple guest house. Air travel? Affordable for very few. In the 1950s, Mallorca was what you would call \"untouched\" today: tranquil villages, empty beaches and a backdrop that belonged to locals rather than tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then came the wave: package tours, large airplanes, affordable prices. And with them a whole new kind of vacation. The 1960s brought the first big rush, the building boom began and mass tourism was born. As the documentary shows, this was also a time of improvisation for many hoteliers and restaurateurs. After all, the sun-seekers had to be accommodated and catered for somehow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nostalgia and reflection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The film, staged by director Marvin Entholt<\/strong>brings this period back to life with archive material and amateur recordings. The interviews with contemporary witnesses such as Maria Pi\u00f1a<\/strong>one of Mallorca's first female hotel managers. They talk about the challenges, but also about the spirit of optimism at that time - and how the island changed radically within just a few decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also learn how Mallorca finally became a hotspot in the 1990s: Celebrities from all over the world set up second homes and the island became the \"Eldorado of the jet set\", as the program description puts it. However, the visitors' love for the island has long had a dark side: With over 18 million tourists a year, the longing of many is increasingly becoming a burden for the island's inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Es gibt sie noch, diese Filme, die ein bisschen wie Zeitreisen sind \u2013 zur\u00fcck in eine Epoche, in der Mallorca kein Sehnsuchtsort f\u00fcr Millionen war, sondern ein ruhiger Flecken im Mittelmeer. Die Dokumentation \u201eSehnsucht Mallorca \u2013 Wie alles begann\u201c<\/strong>, die am Donnerstag, 21. November, um 20.15 Uhr<\/strong> auf Arte l\u00e4uft, nimmt uns genau dorthin mit. In die 1950er Jahre, als der Tourismus langsam die Insel erreichte und das heutige Urlaubsparadies noch in weiter Ferne lag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als Reisen noch m\u00fchsam war<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Man stelle sich vor: Urlaub bedeutete damals Koffer in ein Auto packen, mit der F\u00e4hre auf die Insel schippern \u2013 stundenlang, oft auch bei Wellengang \u2013 und schlie\u00dflich ein paar Tage oder Wochen in einem einfachen G\u00e4stehaus verbringen. Flugreisen? F\u00fcr die wenigsten erschwinglich. Mallorca war in den 1950ern das, was man heute als \u201eunber\u00fchrt\u201c bezeichnen w\u00fcrde: beschauliche D\u00f6rfer, leere Str\u00e4nde und eine Kulisse, die eher Einheimischen als Touristen geh\u00f6rte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doch dann kam die Welle: Pauschalreisen, gro\u00dfe Flugzeuge, erschwingliche Preise. Und mit ihnen eine ganz neue Art von Urlaub. Die 1960er Jahre brachten den ersten gro\u00dfen Ansturm, der Bauboom begann, und der Massentourismus wurde geboren. Wie die Dokumentation zeigt, war das f\u00fcr viele Hoteliers und Gastronomen auch eine Zeit des Improvisierens. Vom charmanten Geheimtipp zum Symbol des Massentourismus \u2013 und zu dem Ort, der so viele unterschiedliche Bed\u00fcrfnisse zu erf\u00fcllen scheint.
