But how could the Majorca of tomorrow - the Mallorca 2050 - look?

Palma de Mallorca / ©David Vives

Farmers at the limit: a fight against drought

The change is palpable. People like Joan, a Farmer from the interior of the islandsee their livelihood dwindling. "Autumn used to be the time when life came back to the fields," he says, looking at his cracked, dusty earth. The Reservoirs on Mallorca are almost dried up, the olive trees bare. Joan is one of many who wonder how much longer they can live from farming. The Climate change in Mallorca is no longer a theory, but a bitter reality - and with it comes the need to find solutions.

Mallorca as a pioneer for sustainable tourism

The island, world-famous for its dream beaches and its Mediterranean lifestylehas the chance to Global role model for sustainable tourism to become. With a clear vision, Mallorca could set new standards: soft tourismwhich protects nature, promotes local culture and improves the quality of life of the inhabitants.

"If we show here that sustainability and quality of life go hand in hand, we can show the way for tourist regions worldwide," says Clara, an environmental activist from Palma. From CO₂-neutral mobility solutions to ecological resorts - Mallorca could be a Model region for sustainable development become.

The change in tourism: quality instead of quantity

The future for Mallorca could lie in a move away from mass tourism. Sustainable boutique hotels, gentle active tourism and environmentally friendly cruise ships are no longer dreams, but a possible reality. "Soft tourism means that visitors not only enjoy, but also understand the importance of preserving nature," says Clara, operator of a sustainable boutique hotel.

The island government also has plans: stricter Regulations for vacation rentals, more Hiking and cycling trails and a focus on local Craft markets are intended to make the tourism infrastructure more resource-efficient.

Climate protection: an urgent task

Mallorca could become climate-neutral by 2040 - with energy-efficient buildings, more Solar and wind power plants and a transportation system that works without fossil fuels. "Reducing dependence on imported energy would be a real step forward," says Joan, a local energy consultant.

The water crisis: old pipes, new solutions

Mallorca's outdated water supply system exacerbates the situation. An estimated 30 % of water seeps away unused - a wasteful reality that the island cannot afford. The "Pact for Water" aims to remedy the situation with 19.3 million euros, while the expansion of Seawater desalination plants opens up new possibilities.

Responsible construction projects instead of wasting resources

The demand for vacation homes and pools is causing problems for the island: increasing Water consumption, Surface sealing and exploding real estate prices are a burden on the environment and the local population. In the future Sustainable construction projects with water collection systems and energy-efficient designs could be the solution.

Rethinking mobility: from railroads to cable cars

Mallorca's mobility could become more environmentally friendly: Electric regional trains, Developed cycle paths and even cable cars could reduce car traffic and increase the attractiveness of the island at the same time. "A cable car across the Serra de Tramuntana - that would not only be practical, but a highlight," says Toni, a mountain guide.

Mallorca 2050 - vision or reality?

Mallorca has the opportunity not only to adapt to the future, but to actively shape it. The balancing act between growth and preserving the authentic Mallorcan culture will be a challenge - but also an opportunity. A Mallorca 2050which combines tradition and innovation, could be more than just a tourist destination: a role model for the world.

How do you envision the future of Mallorca?
