With the new four-part series "The Balearic Islands - a paradise in transition" the station shows the diversity and challenges of the archipelago. It starts with the episode "Mallorca, the queen"which will be broadcast on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 6.35 pm. Anyone who only knows Mallorca as a vacation destination will get to see a completely different side of the island here.

©CC BY-SA 3.0CC

From Posidonia to Sobrasada

The documentary takes viewers on a journey to the less obvious treasures of Mallorca. For example to the Neptune grass meadows off the coast. Often misunderstood by tourists as annoying "algae", they are essential for the survival of the marine ecosystem. Scientists José Roepstorff struggles with his project MedGardens to preserve this natural wonder.

Arte has also discovered exciting things on land: for example, the majestic Black vulturethat circle the Serra de Tramuntana. Thanks to the Fundación Vida Silvestre Mediterránea and its dedicated director Ewelyn Tebes there are now around 350 of these impressive birds again. A real comeback for these endangered birds of prey.

And of course the cultural traditions are not to be missed. In Capdepera will introduce the audience to the art of Basket weaving introduced. The women of Ses Madones de sa Llata keep this ancient technique alive - a small but significant gesture for Mallorca's cultural heritage.

Not just Mallorca in focus

The series not only highlights facets of Mallorca, but also takes a look at the entire archipelago. On Wednesday we start with "Menorca, the little sister" continue. The documentary shows the port of Mahón, old Talayotic settlements and the art of the stone slingers.

Thursday is the day "Ibiza, the radiant one". Here, the spotlight is not on DJs, but on firefighters, salt gardeners and an apnoea diver. A refreshing change of perspective on the party island.

The conclusion is "Formentera, the lonely one" on Friday. In addition to the Neptune grass meadows, there are insights into the life of Mallorcan dancers and a photographer who documents birds and their habitats.

Arte at prime time - and online afterwards

For all those who miss the documentary series live: Don't worry, the episodes are available after the TV broadcast in the Arte media library available. Arte shows once again that the Balearic Islands are more than just sun and sand - they are a fascinating cultural and natural heritage that needs to be protected.

isla Link - Arte Mediathek:

Balearic Islands - The four beautiful sisters / Mallorca, the queen

Balearic Islands - The four beautiful sisters / Menorca, the little sister

Balearic Islands - The four beautiful sisters / Ibiza, the radiant one

Balearic Islands - The four beautiful sisters / Formentera, the lonely one

isla Reading tip:

Mallorca's most beautiful beaches: where does all this beauty come from?

Mallorca's slingshot throwers: accurate, traditional and a little terrifying

Arte series about the Balearic Islands starts with "Mallorca, the Queen".
