Spain's consumer protection minister <strong>Pablo Bustinduy<\/strong> has done just that. And the infamous O'Leary response is promptly issued: either Spain buckles and takes the <strong>107-million-euro fine<\/strong> against Ryanair - or the fares will go up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/isla-travel.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Ryanair-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ryanair Mallorca\" class=\"wp-image-25982969\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9Portuguese Gravity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flying is becoming more expensive - or not<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The penalty, Madrid says, is more than justified. Ryanair collects extra fees for everything: for <strong>Hand baggage, check-in, seat selection<\/strong> - probably soon for the friendly smile of the cabin crew. O'Leary believes this is a matter of course. His argument: low fares only stay low if customers pay for extras. A penalty? <strong>Illegal<\/strong>he thinks. And if it is not withdrawn, he will unfortunately have to adjust the ticket prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spain remains unimpressed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Bustinduy counters coolly: consumer rights are more important than the business model of an Irishman with a penchant for fighting. He speaks of blackmail, of unfair methods. Giving in? Not a chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But O'Leary is not alone in his anger. <strong>The EU Commission in Brussels is also getting involved.<\/strong> The court is examining whether Spain's penalties against a total of <strong>five airlines<\/strong> - Ryanair included - undermines the rules of the free market. Madrid has <strong>Ten weeks time<\/strong>to explain itself. Brussels can then decide - or leave the whole thing for <strong>nine months into the extension<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And Mallorca?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The drama could well have consequences for Mallorca. After all, nobody flies more tourists to the island than Ryanair. Rising ticket prices will affect <strong>the savers<\/strong>who have so far secured weekend sunbathing for less than 50 euros. Hoteliers could get nervous. The airlines too. And O'Leary? He's enjoying the drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who gives in first?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Madrid wants to stand firm. O'Leary too. The EU is investigating. The travelers are waiting.
