If you are looking for an authentic vacation on Mallorca, Cala Figuera is the place to be. The fishing village on the south-east coast of the island has retained its charm and offers a mix of tradition and modernity. Here you can forget everyday life, life slows down with the gentle rocking of the boats in the harbor.

©Leandra Rieger

The fishing village of Cala Figuera on Mallorca

Cala Figuera belongs to the municipality of Santanyí in the southeast of Mallorca and has around 700 inhabitants. Despite its increasing popularity, it has retained its original charm. Every afternoon between around 16:30 and 17:30, two or three large fishing trawlers enter the harbor with their catch. Seagulls screech and accompany the arrival of the fishermen, while the fresh catch is already being sorted on board and prepared for sale in the harbor. Traders and restaurant owners wait impatiently for the best goods of the day - for a moment, the hustle and bustle breaks through the silence of the fishing village. Meanwhile, fresh fish dishes begin to be prepared in the surrounding restaurants, their aroma slowly mingling with the salty sea air. The small waterfront promenade invites you to take a stroll - there are no large hotels here, but rather small vacation accommodations and charming cafés with a view of the water. If you are out and about early in the morning, you can watch the fishing boats being loaded with nets and equipment - a real experience for anyone who wants to experience the original Mallorca.

Sights and special features of Cala Figuera

The tranquil fishing village of Cala Figuera is located around 60 kilometers from the capital Palma. The harbor may look familiar to you - it has already served as a backdrop for Mallorcan and international films and commercials. Although the resort also thrives on tourism, it has never become completely dependent on it and therefore does not exude the hustle and bustle of many other vacation resorts. Fishing boats still dominate the harbor today, but only a few people still make a living from fishing. However, Cala Figuera has remained a place that so many holidaymakers love. Spend the day in one of the many bays, swim in the crystal-clear sea or take a short walk and simply enjoy the wonderful views. Time seems to have stood still here... but modernity is slowly moving in in many places: The new construction of luxury villas, the careful renovation of old hotels to adapt them to today's expectations of international guests - a mixture of old and new, with the tried and tested still dominating. And then there are the buildings from the 1960s: clunky, functional, not very charming, but long part of the coastal landscape. The newer buildings? Plainer, larger, often sober - not always an asset to the romantic fishing village.

Why is Cala Figuera called "Fig Bay"?

The name Cala Figuera literally means "fig bay" - a fitting name, as numerous magnificent fig trees grow along the bay. Their fresh green forms a wonderful contrast to the blue of the sea and characterizes the idyllic image of the place. The sweet scent of the fig trees lingers over the harbor, mixed with the salty sea air - a breeze that gives Cala Figuera its very own magic.

Beaches and bays near Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera lacks a classic sandy beach, but the sea is omnipresent. Rocks and steps lead to the turquoise water, which delights divers and snorkelers with its underwater world. The water is crystal clear and, if you're lucky, you might even spot octopuses or schools of colorful fish. If you want to feel the sand under your feet, you can reach the idyllic bays of Cala Santanyí, the double bay of S'Amarador and Cala Mondragó - either in a few minutes by car or on a 45- to 60-minute hike along the cliffs or through the harbor.

Nature & activities in Cala Figuera

The surroundings of Cala Figuera are characterized by pine forests, steep cliffs and picturesque hiking trails. The coastal path to the lighthouse is particularly attractive Torre d'en Beufrom where you can experience spectacular sunsets and enjoy a magnificent view of the silhouette of Cala Figuera. The nearby Mondragó Nature Park with its protected bays and hiking trails is also a highlight for anyone who wants to discover Mallorca away from the crowds. If you prefer something more sporty, you can try stand-up paddling or kayaking and experience the coast from a new perspective.

Life in Cala Figuera - between tradition and modernity

As you stroll through the village, you will notice that it is still very quiet during the day - perfect for strolling through the picturesque harbor and exploring the village and the surrounding area. A special feature of Cala Figuera are the traditional boat garages along the harbor, which are still used by fishermen today and serve as sheltered moorings for the owners of the traditional llaüts, the typical Mallorcan fishing boats with elegantly curved bows. These picturesque buildings are not only an important part of the townscape, but also a symbol of the region's long maritime history. Here, the harbor is not dominated by huge, swanky luxury yachts, but by lazy boats, sailing boats and smaller motorboats - a sight reminiscent of the times when the sea still belonged to fishermen and not to those who dominate the horizon with their luxury yachts.

Arrival & best travel time for Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera is located around 60 kilometers from Palma. The town can be reached by car in just under an hour. There are bus connections from and to Palma via Llucmajor, Campos and Santanyí to Cala Figuera. If you prefer to pedal, you can take the direct main road from Santanyí - or let yourself drift along quieter side roads, past dry stone walls, fig groves, olive trees and gentle hills until Cala Figuera opens up picturesquely before you. The best time to visit? If you like it quiet, come in spring or fall. Cala Figuera is more popular in summer, but remains pleasantly relaxed compared to other places in Mallorca. Cala Figuera also unfolds its own magic in winter - the silence, the clear air and the soft light make the village a special retreat. Only a few restaurants, cafés and stores are open, but this adds to the charm of tranquillity and seclusion.

Cala Figuera: future between nostalgia and change

Cala Figuera is not a place for a quick Mallorca vacation. It's all about the simple life, the beauty of nature and the gentle sound of the sea. Sitting in a small bay by the harbor, the scent of salt and pine trees in your nose, you will understand why Cala Figuera is considered one of the most beautiful villages on the island. Whether strolling along the harbor, enjoying a fresh fish dish or listening to the gentle sound of the waves - Cala Figuera enchants with its unagitated beauty.

But even this tranquil fishing village is not immune to change. While some old fishermen's houses are still being painstakingly restored, modern apartment complexes and exclusive villas are springing up in other places - not always to the delight of those who love Cala Figuera for its authenticity. The big question remains: Will Cala Figuera be able to retain its nostalgic charm or will exclusivity overshadow the village's former character? The old still prevails, but the balance between tradition and progress remains fragile - and will have a decisive influence on the future of Cala Figuera.

isla Reading tip:

Mallorca's most beautiful beaches: where does all this beauty come from?

Cala Figuera and the man of the first hour

Cala Figuera on Mallorca delights with its picturesque harbor, traditional fishing boats and crystal-clear water.
