The Balearic government is currently working on a new coastal law that will bring far-reaching changes for shipping traffic and the protection of historic buildings along the coast. According to a report in the "Diario de Mallorca", speed limits for ships and jet skis are to be introduced in future in order to increase safety on the water.
New speed regulation for ships and jet skis
Ships longer than 12 meters, as well as jet skis, will only be allowed to travel at a maximum of ten knots (18.5 km/h) within one nautical mile (1.85 kilometers) of the islands. Even stricter regulations remain in place in certain marine protected areas. The Minister of the Sea, Juan Manuel Lafuente, emphasized that the new regulation is intended to create order on the water. "Anyone who wants to speed should do so, but a mile away from the coast," said Lafuente.
Protection of historic beach bars
Another focus of the new coastal law is the protection of historic buildings, in particular beach bars, which were built before the Spanish coastal law came into force. These buildings, which are often located directly on the water, are to be listed in a catalog and protected from demolition. However, economic activities that take place in these buildings are not covered by this protection.
Simplification of approval procedures
The new law is also intended to simplify bureaucratic processes in connection with coastal events. In future, the town halls will be responsible for issuing licenses for events and other activities on the coast.
Since the end of 2022, the Balearic Islands have been responsible for their own coasts, after this responsibility was previously in the hands of the central government in Madrid.
