The Ma-10one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in Mallorca, is not only popular with tourists and cyclists. Speeders and amateur drivers have also made the winding route through the Serra de Tramuntana discovered for themselves - as an unofficial race track. For them, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is apparently less a natural beauty spot than a testing ground. But this is now set to end. The traffic authority Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has activated the first five surveillance cameras. The aim: to make the "dream street" safer for everyone.

Curves, panoramas - and illegal races

Between Sóller and the Puig Majorthe highest mountain on the island, it's not just powerful cars and roaring motorcycles that engage in illegal races. They also cause a lot of trouble: cyclists, hikers and local residents are endangered - or deprived of sleep. The idyllic scenery has suffered long enough as a result. But now there is a good chance that the winding beauty of the Ma-10 will once again be what it should be: a road for connoisseurs, not for daredevils.

Where speed cameras are now used

The first five cameras cover particularly vulnerable sections of the Ma-10 and are strategically located exactly where speeders like to push their machines to the limit:

  • Kilometer 47.4: At the junction to Fornalutxon the uphill carriageway.
  • Kilometer 45.5: Before the straight at the Mirador Ses Barquesalso upwards.
  • Kilometer 44.8: In the bend at the Mirador Ses Barques.
  • Kilometer 43.3: On the straight before the small tunnel, this time on the downhill carriageway.
  • Kilometers 42.5: Between Sa Bassa and Sa Comunaalso downwards.

A sixth camera is already being planned: it is to be installed near the tunnel from Monnàber be installed.

32 more cameras - with extras

The five cameras of the DGT are just the beginning. The island council of Mallorca is planning to 32 more cameras which are additionally equipped with Noise level meters are to be equipped. This would allow not only speeders but also particularly loud vehicles to be recorded and fined. However, these cameras must first be approved by the traffic authorities before they can be used to impose fines.

These measures are no coincidence: in recent years, residents and a committed citizens' platform have repeatedly drawn attention to the problem. With protest actions, they made it clear that traffic on the Ma-10 must finally be regulated.

Dream road or race track?

Mallorca is sending out a clear signal with its new surveillance cameras: The Ma-10 is not a race track. It is a panoramic road that hikers, cyclists and motorists alike should enjoy safely. Perhaps this will also bring back the original magic that once made this route a "dream road" - and which has all too often been lost in the noise of engines in recent years.

Conclusion: A step in the right direction

The first five cameras are a good start to restore the dream road to what it should be: a place where nature, peace and respect take center stage. With the planned additional cameras, the fight against reckless speeders on Mallorca will hopefully be successful in the long term.
