A breath of spring underwater: Neptune grass blooms off Mallorca
The latest monitoring results of the Neptune grass stocks before Mallorca and the neighboring islands are cause for optimism. The monitoring network, an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, confirms a general improvement in the conservation status of the valuable Seagrass meadows of the Balearic Islands. This success is a clear sign that the protective measures introduced are taking effect and strengthening the vital ecosystems.
The vital role of Posidonia
Posidonia oceanica, often called Neptune grass is more than just a plant; it is an ecological power plant. This Underwater meadows not only provide a habitat for a diverse marine fauna and contribute to the Biodiversity but also play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. Through their ability to stabilize sediments and bind considerable amounts of carbon dioxide - around 1,600 tons of CO2 per hectare - these seagrass meadows help to keep the Mediterranean clean and healthy.
Encouraging results from years of research
The latest data, collected at 71 study sites between 2002 and 2023, show an encouraging trend: in 79 percent of the areas, the condition of the seagrass meadows is rated as good, while only ten percent are in decline. This positive development shows that living Posidonia meadows can naturally regenerate and spread, especially if they are protected from major damage.
Methods and participants in data collection
Monitoring is carried out underwater using environmentally friendly techniques that aim to accurately record the condition of the Posidonia without damaging the plants. In addition to the density of Posidonia, the proportion of dead plant parts is also documented. In addition, attention is paid to the occurrence of invasive species and the population of the noble pinniped (Nacra). The water temperature is also measured at selected locations. Around ten organizations, twenty diving centers and up to one hundred volunteers take part in this important environmental project every year.
A living hope for the future
The progress made in the conservation of Posidonia meadows is a promising sign that through joint efforts and targeted measures, nature can be protected and promoted even in highly frequented tourist areas such as Mallorca. This commitment to environmental protection forms the basis for sustainable interaction with our planet.
