There is rare unity in the retail sector on Mallorca. Whether traditional stores, supermarkets or the large retail chains - everyone has agreed on ten Sundays and public holidays open for business in 2025. December and Black Friday will be particularly busy, while the traditional sales periods will continue to lose their importance.
The dates for 2025
The ten agreed dates that have already been submitted to the Balearic Government are:
- January 5 (Sunday before Epiphany)
- March 1 (Saturday, Day of the Balearic Islands)
- April 17 (Maundy Thursday)
- August 15 (Friday, Assumption Day)
- September 7 (Sunday before the start of school)
- November 1 (Saturday, All Saints' Day)
- November 30 (Sunday after Black Friday)
- December 6 (Saturday, Spanish Constitution Day)
- December 21 (Sunday before Christmas)
- December 28 (Sunday after Christmas)
After initial hesitation, union representatives finally accepted the concentration of open days at the end of the year. This willingness to compromise led to an agreement. In return, the large retail chains have given up Sunday sales at the beginning of the winter and summer sales - after all, the "rebajas" fever has noticeably lost its luster compared to Black Friday. The agreement still has to be officially approved by the responsible commission in the Balearic Ministry of Economy, but no changes are expected.
The current situation until the end of 2024
There are still six Sundays and public holidays open for business until the end of 2024:
- September 8 (Sunday before school starts)
- October 12 (Saturday, Spanish National Day)
- November 3 (Sunday after All Saints' Day)
- December 6 (Friday, Constitution Day)
- December 22 (Sunday before Christmas)
- December 29 (Sunday between the holidays)
These dates apply throughout the Balearic Islands. Irrespective of this, small stores are theoretically always allowed to open, even if they rarely do so on public holidays. There are also special exceptions in the tourist zones of the islands. The Festival Park in Marratxí (Mallorca Fashion Outlet) enjoys almost unlimited opening hours.
