The warm winter months have Processionary moth caterpillarknown locally as the pine processionary moth, activated early on in Mallorca, reports isla Magazine. These caterpillars, which are known for their irritating stinging hairs, pose an increasing danger to locals and tourists.
Dr. Maria Beltran from Pollença has shared important first aid measures that should be applied immediately after contact with these caterpillars. "First of all, the affected area should be washed thoroughly with water without rubbing to prevent further spread of the stinging hairs," explains Dr. Beltran. She also recommends applying a cream containing corticosteroids to the affected areas to relieve inflammation and itching.
For more severe reactions, especially if they extend over larger areas of skin or affect the airways, Dr. Beltran advises taking an antihistamine. "If these measures do not help or if swallowing or breathing difficulties occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately," warns the doctor.
The processionary moth caterpillar, which often moves in long rows and whose stinging hairs can cause severe allergic reactions on contact, is particularly common in pine forests. Their hairs can be carried through the air, which means that even people who have not directly touched the caterpillars can develop symptoms.
The symptoms of contact range from mild itching and redness to severe allergic reactions. "It is important to understand that it is not the caterpillar itself, but the fine stinging hairs that cause the allergic reactions," emphasizes Dr. Beltran.
The municipality advises caution in the affected areas and recommends observing warning signs and avoiding areas where processionary moths are known to occur. This is particularly important for families with small children and pets, as they can be particularly sensitive to the stinging hairs.
