On April 18, the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears (OSIB) invites you to an extraordinary orchestral show at the Teatre Principal in Palma de Mallorca. The event, entitled "Belle Epoque", promises a musical journey back in time to the flourishing Paris of the 19th and early 20th centuries. At a time when Paris is preparing for the 2024 Olympic Games, this concert brings the city's past splendor back to life.
Under the direction of Pablo Mielgo and with Nigel Carter as narrator, masterpieces by Jacques Offenbach, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy will be presented. The concert begins with Offenbach's lively overture to "La vie Parisienne", which captures the atmosphere of Paris at the time of the 1867 World's Fair. The evening promises to get the audience "in the mood", especially with the lively conclusion of the overture.
Stravinsky's "Le Sacre du Printemps" strikes a completely different note. The premiere of this ballet caused a scandal in 1913, and even today the music is known for its raw intensity and innovative power. Ravel's "Bolero", known for its tireless crescendo and hypnotic melody, and his "Pavane pour une infante défunte", a calm, reflective composition reminiscent of an old-time dance style, will also be heard.
The concert concludes with Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune", a key work of Impressionism that masterfully captures the subtle shades and textures of this musical epoch.
The event is not only a celebration of French music and culture, but also an opportunity to discover the joie de vivre of Paris and the Moulin Rouge. This night of concerts will tell a story of transgressions and rebels, set to the tender and often tumultuous music of Impressionism.
