The eMallorca Experience Forum concluded on Thursday with ground-breaking ideas for a sustainable future of tourism. Under the banner "The tourism of the future: natural resources, sustainability and social harmony", experts gathered at Es Baluard Museum to discuss the harmony between the environment, residents and visitors on Mallorca.
Susanna Sciacovelli, the island council's tourism director, opened the forum with a strong appeal: "Tourism is the industry of happiness, and now it is time to guarantee this happiness for the locals too." Her speech outlined a vision of tourism that both brings joy to visitors and improves the quality of life of the local population.
Manuel Molina, Director of the specialist portal Hosteltur, took up the explosive topic of overcrowding. With clear words and supported by current statistics, he drew attention to the need to take decisive action now. "Time is pressing," warned Molina, "and half-hearted solutions such as greenwashing will get us nowhere."
Daniela Otero, Acting Chair of the UN World Committee on Tourism Ethics, emphasized the global efforts to strengthen the code of ethics for tourism and called for the application of specific strategies tailored to local circumstances.
Martí March, Mayor of Pollença, and Miquel Nadal, Mayor of Sóller, shared their direct experiences with the challenges of tourism in their communities. March's call for a national pact for sustainable tourism underlines the urgency of finding common solutions.
Agripina Rocha, tourism councillor for Capdepera, and Joan Monjo, Mayor of Santa Margalida, discussed infrastructural improvements and the need to distribute investments more fairly in order to reduce the burden of tourism.
Juan Antonio Amengual, Mayor of Calvià, spoke out in favor of a higher quality tourism offer and emphasized the need to overcome negative stereotypes such as those of Magaluf.
The eMallorca Forum has made it clear that the time for sustainable change in the tourism sector is now. The forum's discussions and proposals set a new standard for the future of tourism in Mallorca and provide a blueprint for other regions worldwide.
