Black Friday has long since reached Mallorca. On November 29th, large retail chains and online stores lure shoppers with tempting discounts - or rather, the appearance of them. The Spanish consumer protection organization OCU warns: Many of the supposed special offers are less cheap than they appear at first glance.
The island paradise in a bargain frenzy
Black Friday has also become an integral part of the pre-Christmas consumer frenzy on Mallorca. Electronics retailers, fashion chains and online platforms outdo each other with red price tags and promises of huge discounts. But how real are the discounts? The OCU took a closer look and discovered that the majority of "bargains" are in fact deceptive packages. And this also applies to the supposed special offers on the island.
OCU: "Only 14 percent real discounts"
A study by the OCU shows that only 14% of the products examined were actually cheaper last year. Worse still: 36 percent of prices actually rose during Black Friday. In Mallorca, where electronics and household appliances are particularly popular, shoppers should therefore take a close look. A visit to one of the big retailers in Palma can be inspiring, but should be taken with a grain of salt.
Local retailers: an honest alternative?
While the big chains often lure customers with dubious discounts, local retailers on Mallorca are increasingly focusing on transparency. Many small stores, especially in the charming alleyways of Palma or in villages such as Sóller or Pollença, offer individual discounts and more honest offers - without the big Black Friday hoopla. Perhaps a handmade piece of jewelry from a store in Alcúdia is a better gift than an overpriced television?
Tips for smart shoppers on Mallorca
The OCU advises: If you want to save money, you should note and compare the prices of your desired products in advance. The same applies on Mallorca: local bargains can often be found away from the main shopping streets. Shoppers should also be aware that there is a 14-day right of return for online purchases - a good opportunity to return a bad purchase without stress.
A look behind the scenes
Black Friday in Mallorca is also a reflection of our consumer culture. While retailers focus on mass discounts, skepticism is growing among many consumers. Is the big shopping day still worth it? Or is the real benefit a conscious awareness of alternatives - be it through sustainable products, conscious consumption or shopping with local suppliers?
