There are nights on Mallorca when it's not enough just to put your feet up and listen to the crickets chirping. Tonight is one of those nights. It's worth setting the alarm clock - or maybe just staying awake - because the sky has big plans. A super moon rises, bigger and brighter than usual, and as if that were not enough, there is also a small "bite" from the moon: a partial lunar eclipse.
What is it about the supermoon?
Supermoon - sounds like the title of a science fiction movie, doesn't it? But it's actually quite simple. The moon is coming particularly close to us right now because it has reached a point on its elliptical orbit that could almost be considered close enough to touch the earth. And that makes it bigger and brighter - at least that's how it looks. A cosmic show that doesn't take place in a movie theater, but directly above us. And the best thing? All you need is your eyes - and maybe a thermos flask of coffee in case it gets late.
The little "moon show" - when does it start?
The real climax of this heavenly drama is the partial lunar eclipse. So if you wake up at night wondering whether it's time to go to the beach, you can simply look out of the window instead. From 4:12 pm the spectacle begins. The moon is slowly eclipsed by the earth. Sounds dramatic? Well, it's more like a little "nibble" on the edge of the moon. Around 4:44 pm the spectacle reaches its climax. The moon then has the famous "bite", as if someone had taken a hearty bite. Until 5:18 pm the moon is whole again.
Clouds? Hopefully not!
Of course, the clouds are always a bit of a fly in the ointment - or in this case, the troublemaker in the night sky. AemetThe Spanish weather service warns of a few clouds, but anyone who knows the nights on Mallorca knows that the sky often plays along. So we can only hope that the clouds clear in time for the show to begin.
Why is it worth seeing?
Lunar eclipses happen quite often, but in combination with a super moon that hovers so bright and large over the sea, it's something special. And for the romantics among us - what could be more beautiful than the coast of Mallorca at night, the calm sea and this huge moon that turns into a cosmic performance for a few minutes? A moment not to be missed.
