Mallorca, the island of dreams, is thinking about tomorrow - and not just in hours of sunshine. On Friday (8.11.), the Commission for the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) officially approved the distribution of the tourist tax to 79 projects. In total, an impressive 377 million euros are available to promote sustainability and the fight against water scarcity.
A clear focus: water and the environment
"Two out of every three euros will go towards projects that tackle water and environmental problems," emphasized Balearic Tourism Minister Jaume Bauzà. The decision is not a whim, but an urgent necessity: tourism leaves a considerable ecological footprint on the Balearic Islands. According to Bauzà, there has been hardly any investment in these areas in the last eight years, which explains the priority of these projects. Around 65 percent of the tourist tax paid by holidaymakers should therefore flow into environmental protection and sustainability projects.
More than the environment: historical heritage and culture
But the tourist tax is not just about nature. A significant portion of the funds is also invested in the restoration and protection of the islands' cultural heritage. A total of 12 projects for the preservation of historical sites have been approved with almost 30 million euros. The aim is to preserve the charm of the islands and at the same time keep their history accessible for future generations.
Illegal vacation rentals in our sights
Another large item concerns the fight against illegal vacation rentals. With over 25 million euros, the tax supports the island councils in enforcing stricter controls and compliance with the law. The revenue from the tourist tax is also intended to help balance out the season and strengthen winter tourism. To this end, 23 projects worth more than 67 million euros have been approved.
Distribution of funds: Mallorca takes center stage
Around 63 percent of the total funds, i.e. around 229 million euros, will flow to Mallorca. The remaining funds are earmarked for projects on the neighboring islands. It is clear that Mallorca remains the central location for investments in a sustainable future.
"This distribution of the tourist tax is a decisive step for the protection and further development of our islands," says Bauzà. The projects are not only intended to protect the environment, but also to improve the quality of life for residents.
