The Tren de Sóller, Mallorca's famous nostalgic train, has gone into its winter break. The historic carriages have been at a standstill since the end of November. Operations will not resume until February 2025 - time for necessary maintenance and restoration work.
A symbol of Mallorcan history
For more than a century, the Tren de Sóller has connected the capital Palma with the picturesque Sóller valley. The route runs through 13 tunnels, past orange groves and offers unique views of the Tramuntana mountains. The quiet rattling of the train, the wood-paneled carriages and the nostalgic flair make the journey a highlight of many people's visit to Mallorca.
Time for care and renewal
Maintenance work is on the agenda during the winter break. Technicians check the tracks, restore the historic carriages and replace wearing parts to keep operations safe and authentic. "Preserving the substance of the train while meeting modern safety standards is a constant challenge," says a spokesperson for the operating company.
A crowd puller in the 2024 season
The Tren de Sóller was once again a crowd puller this year. Thousands of tourists and locals took the opportunity to explore the island in a historical way. Seats were in particularly high demand during the peak season. In addition to the scenic beauty of the landscape, the train offers a nostalgic experience that delights young and old alike.
Sóller is also worth a visit in winter
If you don't want to take the Tren, you can still discover the region around Sóller. Especially in winter, the "Valley of Oranges" offers a tranquillity that is hard to beat away from the summer tourist crowds. Hikes, walks and a visit to the charming old town make Sóller an ideal destination for the mild winter months on Mallorca.
Return 2025
The train will be running again from February 2025, just in time for the opening of the new season. The operators are planning to make the Tren de Sóller more sustainable, for example through energy efficiency measures, without losing its historical character. New experiences for visitors are also being planned.
A treasure on rails
The Tren de Sóller remains a symbol of Mallorca's traditional past and its modern tourism. The train tells the history of the island and at the same time offers a glimpse into its future. When the "Red Lightning" returns next year, it will not only be technically up to date, but also ready to enchant further generations with its charm.
