The ongoing housing shortage in Mallorca has led to unconventional housing solutions, as a recent case near Playa de Palma shows. There, a temporary campsite with over 60 mobile homes was discovered on the grounds of a finca, reports isla Magazine, citing www.mallorcadiario.com. The residents, including Spaniards and most likely also Germans, are living in a legal gray area, the legality of which is now being investigated by the city council.

This situation has attracted attention, especially since the city of Palma recently announced that it would be taking tougher action against long-term campers. According to the new regulations, caravans outside of legal campsites may not remain in the same place for more than ten days, with possible fines of between 750 and 1,500 euros for violations.

The so-called "Can Pollo" camp site covers an area of almost 50,000 square meters and is apparently also advertised on the internet as a place to live. The tenants pay around 300 euros a month to the owner of the land - an amount that is significantly less than the cost of a small apartment. According to reports, the camper community has been in existence for around a decade.

The decision to live on this finca reflects the drastic housing situation on the island, where affordable housing is hard to find. Mobile housing is a financially accessible alternative for many, but the future of such arrangements is in the stars due to new municipal regulations and ongoing reviews.

Palma City Council and the local police have begun investigations to determine whether the camp is operating legally or not. The outcome of these investigations could have far-reaching consequences for the campers and for subletting practices in Mallorca.
